The survey was conducted by Medela India

Recognising the need to encourage mothers to breastfeed, The Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act 2017 was passed by the Government of India increasing the maternity leave period from 12 weeks to 26 weeks. The survey report stated that around 53 per cent of companies have medical rooms that nursing mothers can use to extract milk. One of the most common reasons why new mothers switch to formula feeding of their babies once they get back to work is lack of breastfeeding support and facilities at their workplace, a recent survey said.It also showed that corporates are investing in their female employees, through provision of childcare support and paid maternity leave, in order to retain them when they become mothers. The report highlighted that new mothers who resume work after their maternity leave have two major concerns -- breastfeeding at rubber barrier work and the facilities provided by the employer for doing so.

The survey was conducted by Medela India, a leading manufacturer of breast pumps and nursing accessories, in collaboration with ProEves, a leading childcare and maternity solutions provider. It highlighted that of the companies surveyed, only one-third, 33 per cent, provide dedicated nursing room for women to extract breast milk, while only 37 per cent of them provide a storage unit for extracted breast milk." "The next thing would be to help break the taboo of breastfeeding (or pumping) at work, to make women proud of it instead of hiding it, by establishing a better dialogue between manager and returning employee to help deal with this transition in a very hormonal and emotional period," she said.It was conducted across 38 leading organizations under various sectors like FMCG, manufacturing, IT, ITES, e-commerce, Financial Services.Speaking about the need for corporates to support mothers in sustaining their breastfeeding decision, Emilie Moulard, the Managing Director of Medela India said, "The first thing is to offer comfortable breastfeeding/pumping facilities like dedicated rooms and equipment such as breast pumps, storage bags, feeding pillows..It said that 92 pc of the companies surveyed comply with the provisions in the Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act 2016 in terms of nursing breaks. The World Health Organization recommends mothers to exclusively breastfeed their infants for the first six months and continue breastfeeding along with solid food up to two years to build a healthy foundation for the child

There are no required facilities and food is of sub standard

Calling it a "serious issue," the PAC said that the mentally challenged children are entitled to certain special facilities, which were not available in the general reform homes. The child and welfare committee should submit a written reply to the PAC within three months," the PAC said in its report published recently for the year 2011-12. There has to be regular checking and monitoring of reform homes so that the condition can improve," the PAC said. "The PAC recommends that these children should not suffer in any case," it added. There are no medical facilities and the government should provide psychological help also. There are no required facilities and food is of sub standard quality. The PAC has also lambasted the department for not giving any training to orphan children and just sending them out on their own once they turn 18. There were 30 children, of which 16 were shifted to bigger reform homes for children at Yerwada, while the remaining 14 were sent to a rehabilitation centre for children in Pune. A home for mentally challenged children was shut in Pune district’s Shirur tehsil in 2010.

The PAC recalled the remarks by the Comptroller and Auditor General and said that, "The reform homes are in a very bad condition.MUMBAI: The Public Accounts Committee has taken strong objection to the Women and Child Welfare department’s decision to shift 30 mentally-challenged children to general reform homes after closing their shelter in Pune district. The boys are kept in the orphanages till the age of 18 and girls till the age of 21. Calling it a temporary arrangement is not an excuse for the government."This is a highly objectionable matter.. It is expected that the children become self-sufficient before they become adults.", the PAC further added."Even the plight of children in orphanages is bad and the government should give more funds for them as "parent" of these children. It is a very serious thing to shift mentally challenged children into reform homes, when they require special care. However, the department is not taking adequate measures Rubber Cable protector Manufacturers to make them self sufficient

The answer is a shoulder shrug

On the other four parameters India does not do too well, which brings the score down. These are: per capita GDP, life expectancy, corruption, support systems, freedom to take decisions, and generosity. While the present government has been attempting to reduce human interface for any interaction with the government, for say a licence, food card, permit etc. Add to this the constant call to follow economic Darwinism, which is the survival of the fittest, where the government helps those who help themselves. This is not just at the individual level but also in corporate operations. But this statistic does not take into account the distribution pattern., given the federal nature of the country and the plethora of regional laws, it is always a challenge to deal with officials.

The freedom from corruption factor is something that affects all citizens.Lastly, are we a generous society? While there are pockets of generosity in the exogenous sense which has made a difference to the lives of children and the aged, the compulsion under corporate social responsibility is still an eyewash as companies dodge the responsibility by contributing to designated funds which work just as how normally such organisations do - large part used for salaries and administrative expenses. .Given that the 3,000 odd responses were well-distributed across the income scale, there would have been an upward, not a downward, bias., are less likely to kill than earlier. First, the advance of medicine and the efforts of various multilateral agencies and private foundations to eradicate diseases that are in the nature of being epidemic-like, have helped tremendously. Second, under the force of competition, companies have actually brought down the cost of medication, which makes it more accessible to the poorer sections. Therefore, governance is something that needs to change. One way out is to debunk what the UN says. The UN gets the views of around 3,000 persons from each country on six attributes. Hence, death from diseases like small pox, cancer, coronary ailments etc. We need to remember that the socio-economic Census of 2011-12 showed that 60% of rural households are classified as being under deprivation.Notwithstanding the economic achievements of the country, India does not appear to be a happy nation, according to the UN, which tracks a Happiness Index. Where facilities exist, as in the urban areas, income barriers are erected as there is wide disparity between private and public health facilities where commercialisation and profit motive of the former has virtually excluded the not-so-rich.

Caste, religion and other non-economic considerations still contribute to stratification of society, while the political system appears outside the boundaries of ethics. As long as the public education system remains dysfunctional (we highlight the mid-day meal scheme, though never the employability of such students), we will never be able to actually get to make the economic choices that we desire. But if we look closer, purely from the economic perspective, the picture is quite true even if we keep aside the social, political and judicial systems that keep the common man unhappy. Therefore, while we may take umbrage at the low score in happiness, especially compared with some of our neighbours, the truth is that we are quite a distance away from reaching the optimal mark in almost all these areas. The PDS (public distribution system) as well as programmes such as NREGA (National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme) should ideally be happiness inducing. In fact, India is ranked 122 out of 155 countries in the report. Need we say more?.On the second parameter, life expectancy, most countries, even those that are extremely poor, would score well over the years for two reasons. A high level of economic illiteracy China Rubber Cable protector Manufacturers and the absence of proper land records put the poor at a disadvantage.Third, do we have systems we can rely on when we are in trouble? Where society ties are strong, the community will help out but will reach the barrier of access to, say, health facilities, which are predominantly provided by the government in rural areas and are of low standard. But even within the circumference of economic parameters, the score does not look too encouraging. Let us see how this works. Second, are people free to take decisions about their future?

The answer is a shoulder shrug because while there are queues in the employment line, there are not enough jobs.3-1.4%.With more than half the population still languishing in deprivation economically, is it any surprise that India is not a happy nation? The 2017 World Happiness Report says India is among the world’s saddest nations. While efforts are on to ensure that the delivery of such services is made efficient, given the expanse of the country and the population, it is not adequate. For two of these six attributes, India could be doing well going by the statistics. Per capita GDP growth is ambivalent in interpretation, but the number always tends to be upwardly mobile as the economy continues to grow by say 7-8% and the population at 1
